Reserve Program

Why Join?

The CBFPD relies on reserve members to help us staff regular duty shifts and to supplement our response to significant incidents. Our volunteer program has relied on dedicated community volunteers for decades and our current reserve program utilizes a mix of volunteer and part-time paid members that integrate and train with our full-time staff members. Being a reserve member comes with team camaraderie and the opportunity to learn and practice new skills in a dynamic environment. We accept reserve members interested in firefighting, emergency medical services or both.

Joining the CBFPD is an excellent way to participate in community service that really matters. Help Crested Butte by saving lives and fighting fires.

Our reserve program is limited to 30 members and is currently: FULL

We are, however, always willing to talk with individuals interested in current or future openings with and encourage completion of the interest form below at any time.

Application Process

1

Fill out the Interest Form

Tell us about yourself and how to contact you. As positions become available, we utilize our interest list to schedule interviews.

2

Interview with CBFPD

You will be invited for an interview with the District based on interest, location and qualifications as positions become available. The interview process includes verification of qualifications, a background and driving record check.

3

Schedule a Ride-A-Long

This is your opportunity, as a future member, to come to the station, meet team members and participate in daily tasks.

Teamwork

Firefighters and EMTs work as a team at emergency scenes. Their work also includes training, station and equipment maintenance, fire prevention activities, and public education. You must be in excellent physical condition to meet the demands of the job. For firefighters, this means you must work quickly, handling heavy equipment for long periods of time while wearing special protective gear — often in hot and hazardous environments. If you can meet the challenge of strenuous work and like the idea of helping people, consider applying for the position of firefighter. For EMTs, this means you must think quickly on your feet, perform accurate patient assessments, and provide technical treatment to the sick and injured.

Benefits

Part-time reserve members receive an hourly wage for participation in fire department activities based on their role and experience. Volunteer members who meet participation requirements receive a monthly stipend to offset expenses. Uniforms, equipment and training is provided. Workers compensation insurance is provided to all members in the event of injury incurred while training or participating in CBFPD activities. Most importantly, you will have an opportunity to serve your community. Once you are a member you may also be eligible for our annual recreation benefit that can be used to purchase a ski pass.

Requirements

Minimum 18 years of age (out of high school); Valid Colorado driver’s license with a clear driving record; Live or work within the area served by CBFPD.
For EMS: Minimum 18 years of age; Valid Colorado driver’s license with a clear driving record; live or work within the area served by CBFPD, current valid EMT – Basic, AEMT, EMT-I or EMT-P certification, current CPR, and a negative drug screen including marijuana.

Firefighter Training

Every new member is required to complete a cadet program before the individual is authorized to fight fires. After the cadet program, the individual is a Probationary Fire Fighter. This is to allow for additional training time at the station-level and for the person to get limited hands-on experience at fires until he/she is ready to be a firefighter.

EMT Training

There are several levels of emergency medical technician training, and we will work with you to progress through these levels as your time and interests allow. CBFPD hosts an annual EMT-Basic course starting early fall and usually ending just before Thanksgiving. An IV certification course usually follows soon after.

Equipment

The uniform and firefighting clothing is provided to the new member by CBFPD. This equipment remains the property of the CBFPD and must be returned upon leave/termination.
